White Horse & Bower SW1P 2EE (Shepherd Neame): this site is finally due to reopen on 10 Sept 2025, following major building work. From the Shepherd Neame PR department: The wait is nearly over. After a stunning £950,000 transformation, The White Horse & Bower is reopening its doors on Tuesday 10 September – and you’re invited to be among the first to experience it. Just moments from Westminster Abbey, this historic London pub has been thoughtfully refreshed, blending its original character with a stylish new look and feel. Our kitchen is ready to serve a delicious new menu of locally sourced, seasonal small plates, hearty mains, and weekend brunch. The refreshed drinks list features award-winning Shepherd Neame beers, signature cocktails, and premium wines, including bottles from Kent’s flourishing vineyards. Service charges at the bar: Glendola Leisure operates nine pubs in London including, in our patch: Waxy O’Connor’s & Waxy’s Little Sister in the West End; the Barley Mow in Westminster; the Prince Alfred in Bayswater. Staff at these pubs now add an automatic 3% or 4% to the bill unless customers ask them not to. This is a way of ensuring money can go to staff through the tipping system without the operator paying tax. See https://www.londoncentric.media/p/why-london-pub-automatic-service-charge-real-reason-tax
It is reported that other pub operators are studying this innovation.

At ground-floor level there is an impressive curved foyer named Riverside Market containing various street-food outlets and two bars. The development is being marketed under the overall name Fulham Pier and the website given is their website not the football club's. SW6, MARKET HALL (London Underground), 472 Fulham Road, SW6 1BY. Reopened as WALHAM GREEN . Closed for over three years this Grade II listed building has now become a JDW venue named Walham Green, which was the name for Fulham Broadway underground station until 1952. The building was the former entrance and ticket hall of the underground station. The pub redevelopment reportedly cost almost £3 million; it has over 4,700 square feet of customer area, set over its ground and first floors plus a first-floor roof terrace (600 square feet). There is an open kitchen and natural daylight from the rather magnificent glazed roof above; the upstairs seating area has windows looking down on the bar and for the less agile, there is a lift to the upstairs. JDW has also retained certain of the old-style shop fronts. On the opening date three regular cask ales (Abbot, Ruddles, Doom Bar) plus six guest ales were reported. And if you do not want to queue at the bar and are tech-savvy, there is an 'app station' with beer wall allowing pours of popular drinks.

-
W11, DISTILLERY, 186 Portobello Road, W11 1LA. After various incarnations and periods of closure this site is now PERMIT ROOM, an all-day bar-cafe styled on Bombay pubs and operated by Dishoom. The name is inspired by the illegal drinking culture in many states after India's independence in 1947; by 1973 the law was relaxed and it became possible to apply for a permit to say you could drink alcohol. The food is Indian-style apart from the breakfast menu which is Anglo-Indian! Options include kids' portions and local home-delivery. The bar walls feature art from both local and South Asian artists. Note that whilst the licence permits sale of alcohol from 8am, up to 10am sale of alcohol must be ancillary to meal consumption.
-
W12, POCKET WATCH (Brakspear Pub Co), 434 Uxbridge Road, W12 0NS. Now the HAWTHORN. After a period of closure, this site reopened with a new name and under new management. The Hawthorn is managed by Publican Pubs run by Peter Creed & Tom Noest, who operate five upmarket gastropubs in the Cotswolds. The focus in the Hawthorn is on simple pub food, with a straightforward drinks menu and beer selection; beer remains tied to Brakspear who own the pub. Food is sourced as much as possible from existing Cotswold suppliers and includes bar snacks, steak nights, chicken nights, and Sunday roasts. The food has been described in reviews as "great value". Two handpumps for cask ale. Toilets are upstairs.
