Branch meeting at Portobello Brewery
We had a great branch meeting at Portobello Brewery in June.
At our branch meetings we discuss all matters relating to CAMRA, pubs, and campaigning for real ale in the West London area. Many of us also stay for a chat and some more beer after the business of the meeting has ended.
Portobello were very hospitable and were kind enough to put on a cask of their VPA and also some Pilsner which we enjoyed very much.
The July 2017 branch meeting is on Tuesday 11th July, upstairs at the Harp - a classic pub with a great selection of beers. We're meeting from 7pm for a 7.30pm start to the meeting. We'd love more branch members to come along - please do!
Springing into summer
As spring draws to a close and we head into summer, the Star Tavern in Belgravia had this impressive 'Jack and the Beanstalk' floral display, and a special beer "Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum!" from Windsor & Eton Brewery. It was their contribution to the Belgravia in Bloom week which has just finished.
We've also got a great range of events planned for West London CAMRA during the summer. This includes the presentation of the West London Pub of the Year 2017 certificate to the Star Tavern itself and the runner-up presentation at the Union Tavern.
Our branch events as usual are listed in the branch diary. Why not come along and join us? Here's a summary of what we've got planned so far:

Good Beer Guide 2017 out now!
The Good Beer Guide 2017 is out now with a selection of 4,500 of the best real pubs in the UK and information on all real ale breweries. It's available as a book or mobile phone app - for details and to purchase a copy go to www.camra.org.uk/gbg. The guide is compiled using surveys carried out by volunteers from CAMRA branches across the country including West London Branch.
We've got about 500 pubs serving real ale in our branch, so it's quite an effort to survey them! As well as the Good Beer Guide, we also survey the pubs in our branch area for WhatPub whatpub.com - CAMRA's online pub guide, which includes details of all the pubs in our branch and almost all pubs throughout the UK. You can help with this by submitting updates to us of any changes which have happened to pubs. This can be done by clicking the ""Submit Updates"" on the appropriate pub's WhatPub page, and filling in the feedback form. If you're a CAMRA member you can also submit beer scores on WhatPub - for information on scoring see www.camra.org.uk/nbss.
Why not come along and help us survey pubs. We've got several evening pub survey crawls coming up in the next few weeks:
Wednesday 16th November - SW1
Tuesday 29th November - SW3
For details of all these surveys and other branch events, see the branch diary.
Wetherspoon's social
West London branch members enjoyed the social on Tuesday 30th August when we visited two Wetherspoon's pubs - the Shakespeare's Head and Penderel's Oak. Ten of us came along on the social. A good selection of beers was available and many of us had some food.
We were able to benefit from the 50p off Wetherspoon's vouchers: CAMRA members get £20 of vouchers each year. This is one of the many benefits of joining CAMRA - if you're not a member why not join now!
The branch has a social, survey crawl or other event on most weeks, have a look at our branch diary. Our socials are informal gatherings at a couple of pubs just to chat and try some beers. Everyone is welcome, even if you're not a member or are from another branch area.
Events coming up during September 2016 include:
- Wed 14th Sep: SW3 (Chelsea) survey crawl - a chance to help us survey a few of the local pubs, and try a few beers while doing so!
- Mon 19th Sep: branch meeting - one of the monthly business meetings of the branch where we discuss all sorts of matters about the branch and campaigning (e.g. pub preservation), we then tend to chat and have a few beers for a while after the meeting
- Tue 27th Sep: SW1 survey crawl - another survey crawl, this one is around the Whitehall area
For all the times and details see the branch diary.
