CAMRA members gathered at the Cleveland Arms, Paddington, at lunchtime on Sunday 16th June to congratulate the Cleveland Arms team on their third-place award for the branch 2013 Pub of the Year. With hundreds and hundreds of pubs within the branch area, it is a magnificent achievement even to be on the short-list let alone come third. The Cleveland has transformed itself over the last few years into a real-ale haven, a friendly local pub serving excellent real ale. The photograph shows branch chairman Les Maggs (left) with landlord John King receiving the award. With his various past CAMRA awards taking up much of the available bar space, John is now wondering where he can put the 2013 one!

The results are in, and we can now announce the winner of this year's Pub of the Year for 2013. This year it is the Churchill Arms in Kensington, a Fuller's pub crammed full of memorabilia and with excellent Real Ale. The picture shows the awards ceremony on Saturday 8 June. Left to right, Les Maggs (branch chairman), Gerry O'Brien, Manager of the Churchill Arms; and John Cryne, London Liaison Committee chairman.

The Pub of the Year runners up are the Cask Pub & Kitchen in Pimlico and the Cleveland Arms, Lancaster Gate.

The presentation at the Cleveland Arms will be held on 16 June at 2 pm and Cask Pub & Kitchen on 25 June at 7:30 pm. All are very welcome!

Once again, for the fourth time in six years (2006, 2008, 2010, 2012), it is our pleasure to announce that the Harp, Chandos Place, Covent Garden, is our Branch Pub of the Year. The last time The Harp was eligible for this award, it went on to win the competition for CAMRA National Pub of the Year. This was the first time ever that a London pub had captured the coveted plaque.

First Runner-up was the Cleveland Arms, Chilworth Street, Paddington. This friendly neighbourhood local is a perennial occupant of the top three pubs in the branch.

This year, there was a tie for Second Runner-up, with the White Horse at Parsons Green and the Uxbridge Arms in Notting Hill Gate tied for third place.

This is a tough competition. There were ten pubs on the short-list and the winners were chosen by a public vote that was open to all branch members. Please join us in congratulating the licensees and watch the Branch Diary for announcements of the award celebrations and presentations in each pub.

Members of West London branch and a large number of customers assembled at the Cleveland Arms, Paddington, on 10th June for the presentation of the branch 2012 Pub of the Year runner-up award. The photo shows proud landlord John King holding the award certificate, along with his members of staff; and our chairman Les Maggs also behind the bar and hoping to pull himself a free pint!

The Cleveland Arms (28 Chilworth Street W2 6DT) is a Good Beer Guide stalwart, a friendly free house with five real ale pumps, and well worth a visit if you are in the Paddington area; or even if you're not!

West London branch celebrated their 2012 Pub of the Year award at the Harp, Covent Garden, on Tuesday 17th April. Les Maggs, branch chairman, presented the award certificate to landlady Bridget Walsh and her staff. The pub achieved the ultimate prize of CAMRA National Pub of the Year in 2010 and is fast running out of space on its walls for its numerous awards! The whole of the branch committee and many other CAMRA members were present on the evening to congratulate Binnie on yet another outstanding achievement for her magnificent pub.

Saturday 23rd June saw a good turnout by branch members at two famous pubs, for the branch Pub of the Year third-place awards. This year two pubs tied for third place, the White Horse at Parson's Green, and the Uxbridge Arms near Notting Hill Gate. Roll-zx-011The branch reckons it has over 800 pubs in its patch so getting into the top 3 is a major achievement for any pub and a credit to its staff - and its beer! Photos show manager Jez Manterfield and his staff at the White Horse receiving the award certificate from branch chairman Les Maggs; and landlady Linda Lawton of the Uxbridge Arms receiving her certficate.

The Government Planning Inspectorate, in a decision dated 17 September 2012, has dismissed the appeal made against Kensington & Chelsea Council’s refusal to grant planning permission to turn the Cross Keys pub into a private residence. The Cross Keys, in Lawrence Street, Chelsea SW3, was described by the Planning Inspectorate as “much valued by the local community as a neighbourhood resource and meeting place, and for its contribution to the vibrancy of the local streets” and that it “contributed to meeting the needs of the local community through provision of facilities and as a place of social interaction”.

Greg Mulholland MP, chair of the Parliamentary Save the Pub Group, said in a congratulatory email:

“This is great news, well done all! I would like to visit the Cross Keys to see it for myself. A clear example of what I christened 'predatory purchasing' of viable pubs to seek to make money through change of use. This is a national scandal. Another is the deliberate production of dodgy viability studies to claim a pub is not viable.”

13th September 2012 was the publication date of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) 2013 Good Beer Guide (GBG), and was also a national CAMRA celebration of the select group of pubs that have been in every issue of the GBG. The prestigious event was hosted by the Buckingham Arms, SW1, one of the two West London branch pubs that were included in the celebrations, the other one being the equally well-known Star Tavern, also in SW1. Our chairman Les Maggs scrubbed up specially for the occasion, and the picture shows Les (left) with Kristin Foord of the Buckingham Arms and Jason Tinklin of the Star Tavern. Congratulations to both pubs for their magnificent achievement of serving excellent real ale over 40 years!
